FOUR STUDENT-ATHLETIC TRAINERS EARN NFL INTERNSHIPS
Brandon Hawk, Kyle Fisher, Kurt Wood and Josh King will represent Texas Tech this summer.
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Sports Medicine program will be represented by four student-athletic trainers at NFL (National Football League) training camps this summer, marking the second-straight year that students from Texas Tech have gathered professional experience in the NFL.
Brandon Hawk (Abilene, Texas), Kyle Fisher (Electra, Texas), Kurt Wood (Childress, Texas) and Josh King (Clear Lake, Texas) were extended internship opportunities from three NFL teams. Hawk and Fisher will join the Dallas Cowboys while Kurt Wood will spend the summer with the Kansas City Chiefs and Josh King with the Carolina Panthers.
The NFL internship program allows student-trainers to work directly under the sports medicine staff of each team. The students work in all aspects of summer training camp and will also spend time at various mini camps held at each team's home training facility.
"This is a great opportunity for these students to work with a professional team and athletes," said assistant athletic trainer Shawn Lindsey. "The experience that they will gain beyond what the normal athletic training student gets is invaluable. These positions are limited based on the number of NFL teams and for all four to apply and be accepted is great for them and for our program. They will represent our program well and we hope that opens the door for opportunities in the future for other students here at Tech."
Third-year student Brandon Hawk earned his second summer internship as he also worked with the Cowboys at their 2008 training camp in Oxnard, Calif. He will be joined by Kyle Fisher who is in his second year in the Tech sports medicine program and will be participating in his first internship.
Kurt Wood and Josh King will also be completing their first internships. Wood is in his second year in the program while King is a third-year student.
