Playing/Practice Season Information

Practice (defined in Bylaw 17.02.1). Any meeting, activity or instruction involving sports-related information and having an athletics purpose, held for one or more student-athletes at the direction of, or supervised by, any member or members of an institution's coaching staff.

17.1.5.3.2.1 Practice Prohibited after Competition. Practice may not be conducted at any time (including vacation periods) following competition, except between contests, rounds or events during a multiday or multievent competition (e.g., double-headers in softball or baseball, rounds of golf in a multiday tournament).

17.1.5.2.1 Skill Instruction. Participation by student-athletes in individual skill-related instruction is permitted outside the institution's declared playing season, no more than four student-athletes from the same team are involved in skill-related instruction with their coach(es) at any one time in any facility and the student-athletes request the instruction.

Definition of Voluntary Activities. The subcommittee has been asked by the NCAA Division I Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Student-Athlete Issues to review NCAA Bylaw 17.02.1 (countable athletically related activities) and provide feedback regarding a definition of "voluntary athletically related activities" proposed by the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). It is SAAC's opinion that an athletically related activity may be considered "voluntary" only under the following conditions:

(a) "Student-athletes and other athletics personnel (e.g., strength coaches, trainers) may not be required to report back any information related to their workouts to their coach.
(b) Workouts only may be initiated and requested by student-athletes.
(c) No attendance may be recorded.
(d) No penalties may be rendered for missed workout sessions.
(e) An institution may not assign specific times for student-athletes to work out.
(f) An institution may not provide awards or incentives for attendance or performance."

17.1.5.4.1 Travel Day. A travel day related to athletics participation may be considered as a day off, provided no countable athletically related activities (see Bylaw 17.02.1) occur during that day.

17.26.7 Safety Exception (Track and Field). A coach may be present during voluntary individual workouts in the institution's regular practice facility (without being considered as countable athletically related activities) when the student-athlete is engaged in field events. The coach may provide safety or skill instruction but may not conduct the individual's workouts.
