Telephone Calls - Rules To Remember

Telephone Calls to Prospects

  • For sports other than football and basketball, telephone calls may not be made with a prospect or the prospect's relatives or legal guardian(s) prior to July1 following the prospect's completion of the junior year in high school. (Bylaw 13.1.3.1) Thereafter such telephone contact is limited to once per week (Bylaw 13.1.3.1).
  • Exception - Men's Basketball: One telephone call to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] may be made during the month of March during the prospect's junior year in high school. One telephone call to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] may be made on or after June 21 of the prospect's junior year in high school. In addition, only three telephone calls to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] may be made during the month of July following the prospect's junior year in high school, with no more than one telephone call per week; thereafter, staff members shall not make such telephone calls more than once per week. (Bylaw 13.1.3.1.2)
  • Exception - Women's Basketball: One telephone call to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] may be made on or after June 21 of the prospect's junior year in high school. In addition, only three telephone calls to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] may be made during the month of July following the prospect's junior year in high school, with no more than one telephone call per week; thereafter, staff members shall not make such telephone calls more than once per week. (Bylaw 13.1.3.1.3)
  • Institutional staff members may accept collect telephone calls place by prospects, provided the calls are placed not earlier than July 1 following the completion of the prospect's junior year in high school. The institution may utilize a toll-free (1-800) number to receive telephone calls by prospective student-athletes, prospects' parents or legal guardian(s). (Bylaw 13.1.3.6)
  • Initiating or arranging a telephone contact with the prospect, the prospect's relatives or legal guardian(s) on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment by staff members or athletics representatives will cause a prospective student-athlete to become a recruited prospective student-athlete at that institution. (Bylaw 13.02.10.1(c))

    Exceptions to the Telephone Rule

  • Men's Basketball Exception - Institutional staff members may accept collect telephone calls placed by prospects, provided the calls are placed not earlier than the conclusion of the prospect's sophomore year in high school. The institution may use a toll-free number to receive such calls from prospective student-athletes, prospect's parents or legal guardian(s). (Bylaw 13.1.3.3.1)
  • Official-Visit Exception - Unlimited telephone calls to a prospect during the five days immediately preceding the prospect's official visit to campus. (Bylaw 13.1.3.3.2)
  • Letter-of-Intent Signing-Date Exception - Unlimited telephone calls to a prospect on the initial date for the signing of the National Letter of Intent and during the two days immediately following the initial signing date. (Bylaw 13.1.3.3.3)
  • Off-Campus Contact Exception - Unlimited telephone calls to a prospect on the day a permissible, in-person, off-campus contact occurs. (Bylaw 13.1.3.3.5)

    Telephone Log Sheet Procedures

  • Telephone calls must be logged on the telephone log sheet. This must be done whether you are calling from home, while traveling or while in your office.
  • Document everything that happens when you make a telephone call (e.g., left a message, had to hold for a long period of time only to find out the recruit was not home, etc.).
  • Document if your call is permissible due to an exception to the one call per week (i.e., NLI signing date, official visit, off-campus contact).
  • A copy of your telephone log sheet should be submitted to your administrative assistant on a monthly basis. Your original log sheet shall remain in your recruiting notebook.
  • Telephone call reports shall be submitted upon request to the Compliance Office by the sport administrative assistant.
