2009-10 McHaney Scholars list

LUBBOCK, Texas - Seven student-athletes representing the nine women's programs at Texas Tech were recently selected as McHaney Scholars by the Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle (MSLC) in conjunction with each head coach.

Jordan Murphree (Basketball), Amanda Alley (representing Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field), Rosalyn Kim (Golf), Megan Hoffert (Soccer), Leah Legler (Softball), Kelsy Garland (Tennis), and Jenn Goehry (Volleyball) each earn the title of McHaney Scholar in addition to their other accolades.

Later this spring one female student-athlete from among this group will be crowned as the McHaney Scholar Student-Athlete of the Year at the TECHspy awards. (The TECHspy Awards are the end-of-the-year student-athlete event honoring outstanding achievement, especially in the area of academic performance.)

Jeannine McHaney was the driving force behind the establishment--and success--of women's athletics at Texas Tech. The award winner exemplifies the standards established by Jeannine McHaney in the areas of academic achievement and athletic excellence as well as service to the community and the university.

Annually, the women's programs receive funds from the MSLC and its donors which are presented to the sport in the name of the student-athlete who earns the award. These funds are then used to augment the budgets for the programs in special areas, such as specialized strength and conditioning equipment and greater opportunities for travel and competition.

The MSLC was enacted to generate revenue for the enhancement of women's athletic opportunities at Texas Tech University. The ultimate goal of the Leadership Circle, named and directed by legendary women's basketball head coach Marsha Sharp, is to provide our women student-athletes with the opportunity to excel in all facets of their collegiate experience. The crowning of its McHaney Scholars is one of the highlights of the year for the group as these student-athletes represent the yearly culmination of that goal.
