The Carry the Fallen Ruck March will take place Aug. 27 at Spirit Ranch in Lubbock
LUBBOCK, Texas – Kliff Kingsbury and the Texas Tech coaching staff are encouraging Red Raider fans to participate in the 2016 Carry the Fallen Ruck March which will be held Aug. 27 at Spirit Ranch.
Â
The march, which begins at 8 a.m., will benefit the Active Heroes organization which assists veterans, active duty military and their families through physical, educational and emotional programs that provide coping skills in an effort to eliminate suicide.Â
Â
"Supporting our military has always been special to me," Kingsbury said. "We are thrilled to be able to work alongside Active Heroes to promote awareness and assist those who have served our great country. This event is something I hope all of West Texas will come support."Â
Â
The organization is particularly close to new Texas Tech strength and conditioning coach and United States Army veteran, Rusty Whitt. Whitt, who joined the Red Raider program this past spring, served as a Senior Special Forces Communication Sergeant in the 10th Special Forces Group from 2003-09 where he was deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) V and VI.
Â
Whitt developed and initiated comprehensive pre-deployment conditioning program for his Special Forces Team prior to and during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received a combat infantry badge, two Iraqi campaign medals and an Army commendation medal with valor.
Â
Whitt, as well as other members of the Red Raider football program will take part in the march which will feature three different distances – 22 kilometers, 10 kilometers and 5 kilometers. The weight of each ruck varies by the march distance.
Â
Interested participants can register online for $50 or the day of the event at $60 per person. Participants with either a military or Texas Tech ID will receive 50 percent off the registration price.
