Men's Tennis Swept by No. 23 Illinois
March 03, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders have been handed their last three losses by Top 25 opponents.
URBANA, Ill. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team fell to No. 23 Illinois by a 4-0 margin on Friday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (6-8) had their two-match winning streak come to a close, while Illinois (8-5) has won six of its last nine decisions.
"We got behind today, and you can't do that against a Top 20 team especially on the road," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "We need to play the match on our terms from the start. There were times where we did, but we need to come out that way. Hopefully, we can learn from this match quickly because we will have the same type of challenge at Northwestern on Sunday."
Doubles action gave the Illini an early 1-0 advantage after the top of the lineup earned the leg up on Texas Tech.
Illinois's Alex Jesse and Aleks Kovacevis came away with a 6-2 decision over Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura in the No. 2 slot to give the Illini an immediate edge.
The No. 1 doubles line wrapped up the opening point for Illinois when Aron Hiltzik and Aleks Vukic served up a 6-3 victory against Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson. It was Curry and Thomson's first doubles setback.
On court three, Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya were in a fiercely competitive 4-3 match versus Zeke Clark and Gui Gomez when play was stopped.
The Illini rode the momentum into singles play and registered opening set triumphs on five of the six courts.
Noe Khlif extended the Illinois lead to 2-0 courtesy of a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Pyry Hyrkkönen at the bottom of the lineup. The Illini made it 3-0 as No. 23 Hiltzik tucked away a 6-3, 6-4 matchup versus Curry in the No. 2 position.
Illinois capped the 4-0 sweep when No. 29 Vukic worked his way to a three-set win over No. 54 Cailleau on court one. Vukic gained an early 6-3 victory in the first set, but Cailleau found his groove in the second set and cruised his way to a 6-2 frame. However, Vukic had the final answer with a 6-3 win in the third.
When play was halted, Thomson was in a tightly-contested 3-6, 6-4, 2-4 match against Kovacevic on court three.
Sendegeya was closing in on victory against Illinois' Julian Childers and possessed a 7-6 (4), 4-3 lead on the No. 4 singles line. He executed a well-placed slice shot late in the tiebreaker to capture the first set tiebreaker, 7-4.
DiLaura had pushed Vuk Budic to a third set and held a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 2-1 edge at the No. 5 spot. He fired out to a four-point lead in the second-set tiebreaker which turned into a 7-5 final.
