Culver Collects Silver Medal
June 10, 2017 | Track and Field
Three First Team All-American performances garnered a 17th-place overall finish for the men’s team.
EUGENE, Oregon – The Texas Tech men's track and field team wrapped up their 2017 outdoor season today at the NCAA Championships totaling seven All-American honors for a No. 17 national finish. This ranks within the top-5 highest positions held by the men's team at nationals since 2008.
"We got a lot of All-Americans today and that was great to see," Head Coach Wes Kittley said. Â
Trey Culver took second-place in the men's high jump competition this afternoon, after clearing 2.21m/7-3 as his final bar. This marked the third-straight outdoor season that Culver has claimed All-American honors in the high jump.
"I'm so proud of him, he is such a competitor. There is no one who competes better on our team. He tied for the win but had one more miss, and on his last attempt he just barely clipped the bar at the end. Still so proud of him and all that he has done. Â Would have loved for him to win, but another championship wasn't in the cards for him today"
The night ended with a No. 2 all-time school record 4x400 relay time of 3:02.29. The quartet, Steven Champlin, Kyle Collins, C.J. Jones and Vincent Crisp, ran the fastest Red Raider race since the 2005 National Championships relay.
"That relay was the most incredible thing. I wouldn't have believed it if you would have told be beforehand that running 3:02 would get fifth. It was a truly great race. They all really competed and everyone had the best splits they have ever run. Just to see them come into the meet and run a second and a half faster than they have all year, in terrible conditions, and get No. 2 all-time was awesome."
Senior Benard Keter took sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase finals where he ran a season-best 8:34.27 race. This stands as the No. 2 all-time Texas Tech steeplechase record, just behind his school record preliminary performance from last year's NCAA Championships.
"We were so hopeful after the first day for Benard since he saved his energy a bit, but he had a good day. He would have had to have his greatest race to have won today."
Â
Kaylee Hinton started her multi-event performance today in the women's heptathlon. Hinton began the day with a rainy 100-meter hurdle run, clocking a time of 14.02 for 976 points. She then moved on to the high jump where she finished second at a final bar of 1.78m/5-10. She had a strong ending in the 200m race where she paced a 24.66 run in a headwind of -3.1, leaving her in seventh overall at the conclusion of the day with 3,344 points.
Tomorrow, Zarriea Willis, Viershanie Latham and Hinton will conclude the meet by competing in the women's high jump, triple jump and heptathlon, starting at 11:30 a.m. PT.
