Hurly Long Breaks Course Record At Pebble Beach
September 03, 2017 | Men's Golf
Texas Tech fires up the leaderboard on day 2 at The Carmel Cup
MONTEREY, Calif. – The Pebble Beach Golf Links have been around for 99 years, hosting five U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship over that time period, while establishing a reputation as one of the world's premier golf courses.
After today's second round of the Carmel Cup, no one has ever turned in a better score at Pebble Beach than Texas Tech's Hurly Long.
Long fired a remarkable 11-under 61 to lead the way on what was a memorable record-breaking day for the No. 22 Texas Tech men's golf team.
Long not only carded 10 birdies to just one bogey on Saturday, he also logged an eagle on the par-5 sixth. His 61 is also tied for the lowest individual round in Tech history with Finley Ewing, who posted a 61 at the 2012 Royal Oaks International. Long, now -14 for the tournament, carries the overall individual lead into the final round.
"There aren't words to describe it," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "A course like this, to have one of our guys come in here and break Tom Kite's course record is phenomenal. This is easily one of the best, if not the best, days I have seen from a player in my 17 years of coaching."
However, Long was not the only Red Raider to torch Pebble Beach on Saturday. Tech combined for 34 birdies on the day on its way to a collective round of 25-under-par, a school record. The Red Raiders, after shooting a collective 4-under on Friday, leaped from fifth to second on the leaderboard, and now find themselves just three shots back of preseason No. 1 Oklahoma State.
Five Red Raiders carded a 70 or better on Saturday, and on any other day, Sandy Scott's 67, Ivan Ramirez's 68 or Fredrik Nilehn's 69 would have been the headline. Instead, it turned into a record-breaking performance across the board.
"I said before we got started that I thought this team has the potential to do some special things this season," Sands said. "I would certainly think this qualifies. Now, if we can keep this rolling into tomorrow, we have a great shot to win this thing."
The Red Raiders (-29) enter tomorrow's final round with a nine-shot cushion over preseason No. 2 Vanderbilt, and No. 3 Oklahoma, the defending NCAA Champion.
Tech will tee off at 9 a.m. CT, off Hole No. 1, and Golfstat will provide live scoring.
