Mentor Program
The Mentor Program is designed to aid freshmen and transfer students make a smooth transition into Texas Tech, both academically and personally. Academic counselors also identify returning student-athletes who may be more at risk to continue in the program. Student-athletes in the program are matched with a mentor who is a junior, senior, or graduate student with a 3.0 or better GPA. Mentors are non- or former athletes. The student-athletes meet with their assigned mentor one or two hours per week to discuss academic concerns, time management, study skills, major and career exploration, and the expectations/demands of college life in general. The mentors provide academic counselors with a weekly report on their meetings with student-athletes.

Mentors, who must adhere to certain guidelines, are monitored through written reports and a weekly meeting. Mentoring positions are competitive with a formal application and interview process for selection. Mentors go through a two-day training program prior to the start of the semester and receive in-service training throughout the academic year.
