LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior thrower Ifeatu Okafor has been selected as a finalist for the 2013 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

The Top-10 men's and women's finalists were announced Thursday and selected from over 500 outstanding minority student-athletes nominated by their respective institutions.

Okafor is a two-time All-American and Big 12 Champion for the Lady Raider track and field team. The Houston, Texas native is not only an elite athlete on the track, but was also named one of 11 finalists for the prestigious McLendon Scholarship last spring after being named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.

The winners of the 2013 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award will be profiled in the April 11, 2013 edition of the magazine.

To be considered for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and are active on their campuses or in their communities. This year the NCAA partnered with Diverse to present this standout class of scholar athletes and over 500 male and female students from across the country were nominated.

The NCAA is a co-sponsor of award and previous winners include Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III (Baylor 2011), ESPN Analyst and former WNBA player Kara Lawson (Tennessee 2003) and former NFL great Marshall Faulk (San Diego State 1993).
