2012 TECHSPY Awards Honor Texas Tech's Brightest

Complete list of 2011-12 Academic Honorees Men's Basketball's Robert Lewandowski was named the Male Student-Athlete of the Year while softball's Ashley Hamada took home the Female Student-Athlete of the Year honor at the 2012 TECHSPY Awards on Monday night at the Allen Theater. Bryce Lamb, men's track and field, and Amanda Dowdy, volleyball, were awarded the TECHSPY's for Male and Female Athlete of the Year. A total of 221 student-athletes were recognized for academic achievement during the spring and fall semesters for 2011. The TECHSPY Excellence Award was bestowed upon 48 student-athletes that achieved a GPA between 3.75 and 4.0 while 68 TECHSPY High Merit honors were awarded to 68 student-athletes. An impressive 105 TECHSPY Merit Awards were distributed based on GPA's that ranged from 3.0 to 3.34. "Each year, TECHSPY Awards is a wonderful opportunity for us to highlight all the great accomplishments of our student-athletes," said Felicia Martin, Associate Athletics Director/Academic Services. "The most exciting part is that the community gets a chance to see Red Raider student-athletes' successes off the playing field. They are winners in the classroom and they are accomplished in the community." The award for outstanding community service was presented to women's basketball while the Good Citizen Award was presented to Luke Adams (Men's Basketball) and Jordan Barncastle (Women's Basketball). The 2012 recipients of the Dr. Gerald Lage Award, granted by the Big 12 Conference with a minimum GPA requirement of 3.8, were Devin Bailey (Women's Track & FIeld), Gabby Dominguez (Women's Golf), Maggie Fete (Soccer), Holley Gentsch (Softball), Ashley Hamada, (Softball) and Ifeatu Okafor (Women's Track & Field). The TECHSPY for Men's Team of the Year went to track and field while the Women's Team of the Year was presented to softball. Both teams enjoyed tremendous success in 2011 and are poised for postseason runs in 2012. Wes Kittley (Track and Field) was named the Men's Coach of the Year while Todd Petty (Women's Tennis) was named the Women's Coach of the Year. The Jeannine McHaney Award was presented to softball's Holley Gentsch while soccer's Maggie Fete collected the Dr. Margaret E. Wilson Award. Football's win over top-ranked Oklahoma earned the TECHSPY for Victory of the Year. The athletics awards presented at tonight's event were voted on by participating student-athletes, coaches, and athletic department employees while the academic awards were chosen by academic staff, senior staff, athletic council, and various faculty. The TECHSPY's are an annual event coordinated by the Athletics Academic Services department. 2012 TECHSPY AWARDS
