Tech Has Four First Places in Opening Day of Texas Tech Open
Feb. 2, 2001 LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior high jumper Michael Beasley qualified provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a mark of 7-1, winning the event on the first day of the Texas Tech Open at the ATC on the Tech campus Friday evening. Transfer Olavi Paavo finished fifth in the men's long jump with a mark of 22-5.25, trailing three unattached entries in the event. Ken Wilson took second in the pole vault with a mark of 15-9. Ryan Curry and Branum Noble continued their good results this season, finishing third and fourth, respectively, in the weight throw. Curry had a distance of 51-4.5, while Noble finished at 49-0.25. Freshmen Scott Moore and Nick Hulstrom finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 5000m, with Moore posting a time of 15:30.6. Fellow frosh Tracie Akerhielm won the women's 5000m in a time of 18:19.4. The men's distance relay team of Dwayne Benoit, Josh Allen, Chris Ramirez and Gezachw Yossef won the event with a time of 11.18.5, while the women's distance relay squad of Bridget Tidwell, Megan Beaty, Jennifer Marable and Katie Lyman took second in the event in 12:33.1. Freshman Bliss Williams led the women Friday, winning the long jump with a mark of 17-9.5. Candice Cole came in fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-1. The Texas Tech Open continues Saturday, with the majority of the running events starting at 10:45 a.m. |
