February 15, 1999 Meet Breakdown Meet: Big 12 Indoor Championships Location: Kansas State University Manhattan, Kansas Date: Feb. 19-20, 1999 About the Big 12 Championships.... The Red Raiders travel to Manhattan, Kansas, to compete in the 1999 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Both Texas Tech teams will look to improve on previous year's performances while posting more NCAA indoor championships qualifying time. Currently the Red Raiders have two individuals, Shamerion Turner in the 200 meters and Rohan McDonald in the 400 meters, and a men's 4X400 relay team provisionally qualified. The lone automatic qualifier is Leigh Daniel in the 5000 meters. The Red Raiders return their only Big 12 champion from last season's meet in Evette Turner in the women's mile. Turner ran a 4:45.72 to capture the title last year. Others to watch on the women's side will be Leigh Daniel in the 5000 meters who holds the top time in the nation and Ngozi Iwu who has ranked among the top five conference runners in the 400 meters all season. Sherri Coleman's times in the 55 meter dash have ranked her among the Big 12's best all season. She could possibly score points for Texas Tech in this event. On the men's side Shameron Turner holds the fastest time in the Big 12 in the 200 meters. He will be joined by a trio of All-America performers in Rohan McDonald, Desmond Johnson and Josephus "Pap" Howard. The four make up of one the best 4X400 relays teams at the meet. Invidually, Howard will look to battle Turner for the 200 meter crown. He won the race as a freshman in 1997. In the 400 meters, watch for McDonald and Johnson, to battle for the top positions in the race. They should both have a legitimate shot to win the race. Daniel won the 5,000 over 34 other runners with a time of 16:15.29. The mark places her in the NCAA indoor national championships held in Indianapolis on March 6-7. Further more, the time is the best by any women's runner in the nation or Big 12 this season, and is the fastest time ever run by a Red Raider women in the 5,000 meters in either indoor or outdoor competition. It was the first time Daniel had competed in the event during the indoor season. "It was one of the most amazing performance I've ever seen," Dave Smith Texas Tech cross counrty/distance coach said."It was a great p.r. in her first performance of the year. She showed great speed at the end of the race. Leigh passed three women in the last 200 meters. I am very pleased with her and believe she could go under 16:00 by the end of the indoor season." With four excellent sprinters on this year's squad, this weekend's championships should provide an excellent opportunity to post more times on the list.
