Tech Wins Two Events On First Day of Red Raider Classic
Feb. 16, 2001 LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field team won two events on the first day of the Red Raider Classic at the ATC on the Tech campus, with victories coming in the women's 5000 meter run and the men's high jump. Senior Leigh Daniel won the 5000 meters in a time of 17:54.42, her first meet on the Tech campus in almost a year. Sophomore Michael Beasley took first in the high jump with a mark of 7-1, the same mark with which he won the Texas Tech Open two weeks ago. Junior Candice Cole finished tied for fourth in the women's high jump, clearing 4-11.75. Freshman Kacie Petropoulos came in second in the women's pole vault with a mark of 9-6.25. Three Tech athletes finished at the top of the men's weight throw. Jason Young won the event, competing unattached, with a throw of 57-1. The sophomore also won the weight throw at the Texas Tech Open two weeks ago. Branum Noble and Ryan Curry took second and third, respectively, in the weight throw, with marks of 54-2.5 for Noble and 51-3.5 for Curry. Tech's Bronzay Rivera took second in the men's long jump with a mark of 22-5, while teammates Justin Ritter and Tyson McKinney finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event. Megan Schuessler finished fifth in the women's weight throw with a mark of 41-10. Frenship product Sage Thames finished second in the men's pole vault, clearing 16-8.75. The meet continues Saturday with running events beginning at 10:45 a.m., and concluding with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 4:30 p.m. at the ATC on the Tech campus. |
