Iwu, Yossef Sweep Men's, Women's 800 Meters in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -

Ngozi Iwu and Gezachw Yossef put an exclamation point on Texas Tech's efforts at the Sierra Providence / UTEP Invitational on Saturday.

Iwu won the women's 800-meter dash with a time of 2:09.05, edging out teammate Shannon Spaulding (2:11.27) by a little over two seconds. With a time of 2:21.68, Evette Turner rounded out the Tech women's best event of the day with a seventh place finish.

Gezachw Yossef took first place in the men's 800-meter dash with a time of 1:50.85. Yossef finished almost three second ahead of second place Mike White of Arizona (1:53.74). Samson Ngetich placed seventh in the event for the Red Raiders with a time of 2:01.86.

Desmond Johnson finished in second place in the men's 400-meter dash. Johnson (47.12) came in just a fraction of a second behind Arizona's Mike Kenyon who ran the event in 46.79.

Tami Zachary and Monique Wright placed second and third respectively in the women's 100-meter dash. Zachary ran the 100 meters in 11.49, just .15 seconds behind first place Fali Ogunkoya , and .08 seconds ahead of Wright.
