Texas Tech's only competitors of the day were in the men's and women's 3,000 meters and the men's 10,000 meters. Half of the field events will compete on Saturday, as well as, preliminary races in 14 different events. Field event action begins at 3:30 p.m. while races will start at 8:55 p.m.

Friday's Notes

Leigh Daniel won the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 9:32.11. Uncharacteristically, Daniel took the lead and was among the race's leaders for most the race. With Karin Ernstrom of Baylor on her heels going into the final lap, Daniel kicked and easily outdistanced Ernstrom for the win. Her time sets a new meet record passing Shayne Willie of Colorado time of 9:36.48 set in 1997. Daniel has now won all six races she has competed in during the 1999 outdoor season. She will race again on Sunday in the 5,000 meters.

"It was a weird race. I didn't feel good out there today - very uneasy. I was tired. I don't know if it was because it was the end of the season or the humidity. But, you can't be dissatisfied with winning."

"I wanted to get out of the pack. I don't like to run between two girls. I tried to get out as hard as I could. My coach didn't want me to take the lead, but no one would so I did. I decided to take it and go with a little more than 400 to go because I know Karin has an awesome kick. I was real nervous in the final lap because I knew she was close behind at the start."

David Leigh finished fifth in the men's 10,000 meters with a time of 32:29.42. It marks Leigh's first time scoring points at a conference track and field meet.

After one day of competition, the Texas Tech women's have ten points and the men have four.
