Texas Tech Track Athletes Fail to Advance at Nationals

DURHAM, N.C. - Texas Tech's outdoor track and field season is finished after a trio of athletes failed to advance beyond preliminary rounds in their respective events Thursday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Durham, N.C. Overall the Red Raiders qualified six athletes for the championships, an improvement over previous seasons, but none of the athletes were able to score points at the national championships.

On Thursday evening Monique Wright-Cruse and Tami Zachary competed in the preliminaries of the women's 100-meter dash. Zachary ran a time of 11.65 while Wright-Cruse ran a time of 11.80. Both finished seventh in their respective heats and failed to make the cut for the semifinals.

For the men, Gezachw Yossef clocked a time of 3:47.03 in the semi-final round of the 1,500-meter run. His time placed him 17thout of 20 runners. Yossef did not make the cut for the finals.

On Wednesday, Jason Young finished 20th in the discus throw. The freshman from Dallas had a top throw of 177'-08". On the women's side, Sherri Coleman finished fifth in her heat of the 200-meter dash. Her time of 23.93 was behind the time of 23.75 posted by the final qualifier. In the women's 800-meter run Ngozi Iwu failed to advance to the finals after clocking a time of 2:09.54.
