Leigh Daniel Takes Second in the 5,000 Meters

BOISE, Idaho - Texas Tech women's distance runner Leigh Daniel (Lubbock, Texas) placed second in the women's 5,000 meter run today at the NCAA outdoor championship in Boise, Idaho. Daniel, the 1999 indoor champion in the event, ran a time of 16:12.72 finishing behind Carrie Tollefson of Villanova who won the race with a mark of 16:09.51. By being one of the top eight finishers in the race, Daniel earns All-America status in the event. It was the first time in eight races this outdoor season that Daniel has not finished in first.

She concludes the 1999 collegiate season as the indoor champion in the 5,000 meters and outdoor champion in the 10,000 meters and holds the top collegiate time in both events. Daniel also set ten new school, conference or track records.

Daniel is scheduled to return to Lubbock via American Airlines on Monday evening at 10:10 p.m. at the Lubbock Municipal Airport. The Texas Tech athletic department and the Committee for Champions are going to hold a victory reception for her at the airport when she gets off the plane. All members of the public are invited to attend.
