LUBBOCK, Texas - One day after watching five athletes grab first place finishes to open the indoor season, the Texas Tech track and field squad wrapped up their first home meet of the season inside the Athletic Training Facility.

Tech finished with 12 first place finishes in the meet, and junior Katie Grimes set a new school record in the 55m hurdles on Saturday afternoon.

"I was real pleased with several performances today," head coach Wes Kittley said.

In her first race of the year, Grimes ran a blazing 7.74 in the qualifying round of the 55m hurdles. The Canyon, Texas native blew past New Mexico State's Jndia Cleveland who trailed behind with a time of 8.42.

"She has really been having great practices and we have been really seeing that from her," Kittley said. "I'm real proud of her. She is a lot more confident than last year. It's just a great start for her.

Grimes later won the 55m hurdles, running a 7.77 in the finals, while senior transfer Precious Nwokey finished in second with a time of 7.95.

The No. 8 Lady Raiders also swept the top three in the 55m dash with 2011 All-American Erica Alexander finishing in first with a time of 7.12. Cierra White and Candace Jackson followed in second and third. Meanwhile the Lady Raider 4x400 relay team took home a first place finish, defeating a strong South Plains team with a time of 3:38.23.

"They held off a tremendous team from South Plains," Kittley said. "I thought they showed a lot of courage there. I see a lot of good things for the future with them."

Distance runner Devin Bailey also recorded a first place finish in the 1000M run, finishing with a time of 2:53.35, winning by nearly a full two seconds.

On the men's side, sophomore pole vaulter Kyal Meyers put on a show, vaulting an impressive 5.20 meters (17' 3/4'") to win the event.

Markus Henderson and Bryce Lamb, who garnered indoor All-American honors in 2011, recorded third and fourth place finishes in the 55m dash. Henderson finished with a time of 6.39 while Lamb followed with a time of 6.42.

The Texas Tech track and field team returns to action Friday by hosting another weekend meet inside the Athletic Training Facility.
