Tech Finishes First Meet Strong|

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 7 Red Raiders and No. 18 Lady Raiders track teams finished the second day of the Texas Tech Open with a strong showing as Tech totaled nine event titles over the two-day meet.
"I thought it was a really good first meet," head coach Wes Kittley stated after the meet. "We used it as a really good workout both Friday and Saturday. I think we had some great things happen especially in the hurdles and throws."
The hurdle crew had a good start to the season. The women started it off by sweeping the top three spots in the 55M hurdles. Katie Grimes edged out teammate Kelsey Lloyd for the victory as both ran a 7.93. Jamie Simanek was third with an 8.14.
The men had three in the top five of the men's 55M hurdles. Bryce Brown ran a 7.35 in the finals to place second. Brandon Tucker was third with a 7.38 and Jamele Mason was right behind in fourth at 7.38.
Shade Weygandt continued her winning ways as she won the pole vault with a height of 4.10M (13'-5.25"). Kyal Meyers started his career at Tech off on the right foot. Meyers set a personal-best in the men's pole vault with a mark of 5.05M (16'-6.75"). Teammate Boston Spiva cleared 4.90M (16'-00.75") to place second.
Terra Evans and Tara Thomas crossed the line one and two, respectively, in the 55M. Evans ran a 6.85 while Thomas clocked a 7.00.
Shannon Jackson opened her season with a victory in the 800M. She paced the field with a 2:17.59.
The Tech women fared well in the shot put with two finishing in the top three. Kelley Closse was second with a throw of 16.16M (53'-00.25") while Ifeatu Okafor placed third with a mark of 14.56M (47'-9.25").
The men's 4x400M `A' team of Brown, Markus Henderson, Mason and Shane Braithwaite ran a 3:10.37 and placed second to South Plains' 3:07.55. The 3:10.37 will put the Red Raiders into the top 10 of the nation.
The other three event titles were the women's weight throw, women's long jump and women's 4x800M relay all won on Friday night.
Texas Tech's next meet will be the Texas Tech Invitational held at the Athletic Training Center starting on Fri., Jan. 21.
