With 13 athletes earning All-big 12 honors in front of a crowd of 1,977, the Red Raiders finished day one of competition a the Big 12 Championships in Lincoln, Neb., at the Devaney Sports Complex. Tech heads into day two with the women and men in ninth place with eight and five points, respectively.

Senior Aki Heikkinen, in his first competition in the heptathlon of the season, is in good contention heading into day two events. Heikkinen is in third with 2,921 points with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m run ahead of him tomorrow.

In the 60m dash junior Shereefa Lloyd had an overall place of eighth in the prelims with a time of 7.49 while on the men's side junior Tyree Gailes finished in eighth with a mark of 6.85. With these times, Gailes and Lloyd advanced to the semifinals. Lloyd ran a semifinal time of 7.50 finishing just one place short, ninth, of advancing to finals. Gailes improved to 6.78 with a sixth-place finish to advance to finals. In the semi finals of the 60m dash hurdles, freshman Shawon Harris finished in seventh with a time of 8.21, advancing to finals.

Junior Brionne Yosten on the final lap of the mile edged her lead to first but on the backstretch fell to second, only .05 seconds behind the winner of the heat, Renee Metivier. Yosten finished fourth with a time of 4:48.16, her second provisional qualifying time of the season in the mile, to advance to finals.

In the 600 yard, junior Jonathan Johnson moved ahead of Ashton Collins, 2003 indoor 400 Champion, on the final lap to win the heat with a time of 1:10.13. Johnson advances to finals in a second-place position.

In the women's 400m, junior Licretia Sibley advanced to finals in sixth place after turning in a time of 55.12. The men's team in the 400 advanced two to finals with junior Albert Booker turning in a third-place finish in a time of 47.71 and junior Matt Stewart finishing in eighth with a time of 48.25.

Booker turned in a personal best and his third provisional qualifying mark as he ran the 200 in 20.99. Booker won his heat, finishing first overall to advance to finals. His previous best mark of 21.21 was set last year at the Conference Championships. On the women's side, Lloyd advanced to finals with a time of 23.91 and a seventh-place finish, her first provisional qualifying time in the 200 of the year.

Tech turned in two all-big 12 honors in field events. Senior Jason Young, in the weight throw, finished in fourth with a toss of 60'-7.75" (18.48m). In the long jump, sophomore Tori Polk earned all-big 12 honors with a mark of 18'-10.75" (5.76m) for an eighth-place finish.

Tech turned in two all-big 12 performances in the 5000. Junior Bridget Tidwell finished in fifth in 16:56.56.1, her best mark in the 5000 this season. In her first appearance of the season in the 5000, senior Tracie Akerhielm trailed closely behind in sixth with a time of 17:02.26.
