Texas Tech Opens Outdoor Season in San Diego|
Texas Tech opened the 2013 outdoor season Friday at the 35th Annual Aztec Invitational.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Texas Tech track and field program officially opened the 2013 outdoor season Friday at the 35th Annual Aztec Invitational on the San Diego State campus.
As Friday's final session of events drew to a close, Texas Tech freshman distance runner Marcos Vallejo turned in an impressive performance under the lights of the Sports Deck. Running in the open section of the men's 5,000-meter, Vallejo crossed the line with a time of 14:25.26 finishing third overall in the event. The lifetime-best time marked the fastest by a Red Raider in the event since the 2008 season.
Earlier on the track, the Lady Raiders took the top two spots in the open 400-meter dash with senior Candace Jackson finishing first overall while clocking a time of 54.24 seconds. She was quickly followed by teammate Tiffany Tarver in second with a time of 55.26 seconds. Freshman Rhenique Williams followed in seventh with a time of 57.80.
Texas Tech newcomer Joseph Richards III earned a top-three finish in the open section of the men's 200-meter dash finishing third with a time of 22.04. Also in the sprints, Red Raider junior Taheric Brantley finished seventh in the men's open 400-meter with a career-best time of 49.37.
Texas Tech also swept the top two spots in the men's high jump led by sophomore Jacorian Duffield who took first place overall with a clearance of 2.13-meters (6'-11.75"). It marked the third career outdoor victory for the Schertz, Texas native. He was followed in second by freshman Bradley Adkins in his collegiate outdoor debut. Adkins, who finished third at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in February, cleared a bar at 2.08-meters (6'-9.75") Friday to finish in second.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles a pair of Texas Tech newcomers took two of the top three places with Dwayne Extol finishing first overall clocking a time of 52.16. He was followed by freshman teammate Tramaine Maloney who crossed the line third with a time of 52.37.
The Lady Raiders collected two top-five finishes in the women's 5,000-meter run led by Chelsea Scott who crossed the finish line third with a time of 18:23.67 - the second fastest time of her outdoor career. She was followed by teammate Madeline Livergood who finished fifth with a time of 18:38.10 in her outdoor track debut.
The Red Raiders and Lady Raiders also competed in each of the open sections of the 4x400 relays. The youthful women's squad, comprised of freshman Tiffany Tarver, sophomore Mariam Amadu, freshman LeTristan Pledger and freshman Rhenique Williams took home a first place finish with a time of 3:48.94.
Meanwhile, the Red Raider 4x400 relay, comprised of freshman Kenneth Williams, freshman Tramaine Maloney, junior Taheric Brantley and sophomore Shujaa Benson got out to an early lead before finishing runner up with a time of 3:17.03.
Both the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders are scheduled to compete in the invitational sections of the 4x400 relays Saturday.
Texas Tech freshman, and 2013 Big 12 Indoor 800-meter run Champion, Nick Rivera finished third in the open section of the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:54.06.
Texas Tech will resume action Saturday at the Aztec Invitational with events scheduled to begin on the Sports Deck at 9 a.m.
