Texas Tech Leaves Mark at Mt. SAC Relays

LUBBOCK, TEXAS - The Texas Tech track and field program wrapped up a busy weekend Saturday evening and turned in a handful of impressive performances at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

The Texas Tech contingent was highlighted by personal-bests from both senior hurdlers Isaiah Gill and Katie Grimes along with season-best performances out of both the men's and women's 4x400 relays.

"We just competed in a very prestigious meet and Texas Tech definitely left its mark," head coach Wes Kittley said. "I am very proud of how we competed."

On the final day of competition in the 55th running of the Mt. SAC Relays, Gill won the men's Olympic Development Elite section of the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 50.58 seconds. The performance jumps him into the top-five nationally entering Sunday and No. 2 in the Big 12 with the conference meet on the horizon.

The Lady Raider 4x400 relay team also took home a first place finish as the crew won the invitational elite section of the race with a season-best time of 3:33.24. The relay consisting of Christen Rivers, Cierra White, Candace Jackson and Amoy Blake edged out the France `A' team in a photo finish. The Red Raider 4x400 relay, meanwhile, finished third in the invitational elite section with a season-best of 3:06.43.

Grimes tied her lifetime best in the 100-meter hurdlers finishing fifth in the invitational elite section with a time of 12.99 seconds. The performance jumps her into the top-five nationally and matches her time from the 2012 Texas Tech Open.

Rivers, a sophomore, finished third in the women's 400-meter dash Olympic Development section recording a season-best time of 53.66. She was followed by teammate Candace Jackson in fifth with a season-best of 54.04.

White, who competed on the Lady Raider 4x400 relay, also finished eighth competing in the invitational elite section of the women's 100-meter dash where she ran an 11.35.

In the field events, senior Bryce Lamb finished sixth in the invitational elite section of the men's long jump with a leap of 7.43-meters (24'-4.50") and seventh in the invitational elite triple jump with a mark of 15.65-meters (51'-4.25").

Also competing this weekend at the Michael Johnson/Dr. Pepper Classic on the Baylor campus in Waco, Texas Tech sophomore thrower Kole Weldon swept both the men's shot put and discus events. Weldon recorded a season-best in the discus with a throw of 56.45-meters (185'-2.00"). The mark ranks 27th nationally and is No. 3 in the Big 12.

The No. 15 Lady Raiders and No. 16 Red Raiders return to Lubbock for their final home outdoor meet of the 2013 season April 25 at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex.
