LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track program opened the 2009 Big 12 Outdoor Championships at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track with six points in the women's 10,000M, and the women sit in fifth place after day one. Lillian Badaru gave the Lady Raiders a great start to the Big 12 Championships.

Running her first 10,000M of her Tech career, she ran a 36:42.50 to place in third overall. The third place scored the team six points.

Chuck Zavala, competing in his first decathlon, sits in eighth place after day one. The freshman started the day off with a personal best in the 100M as he ran an 11.10, scoring 838 points. He jumped 22'-5" in the long jump scoring 774 points and then threw the shot put 46'-1.50" for 732 points. His second-personal best of the day came in the high jump as he cleared 6'-6". Zavala wrapped the day up with a time of 52.91 in the 400M for 685 points.

Ozie Okolie threw a mark of 155'-8" in the preliminaries but failed to advance to finals.

Tech begins competition tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the decathlon. Fans are invited out to watch the action as tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children.
