Tech Finishes Strong at West Preliminaries, 11 Qualify For NCAAs
Tech qualified 11 athletes and four relays over the three-day NCAA West Preliminary meet.

AUSTIN, Texas. - Texas Tech completed action at the 2012 NCAA West Preliminaries with a strong showing in the final day as seven athletes and four relays officially qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
In all, Tech qualified 11 athletes and four relays throughout the three-day meet for the finals of the NCAA Outdoor Championships set for June 6-9 at Drake University.
"We had a great day," head coach Wes Kittley said. "I was really proud of the performance from everybody. We had tough conditions with the heat all three days, but we finished strong with our performance today."
Senior Precious Nwokey will also represent Tech at the NCAA Outdoor Championships as she previously qualified for the women's heptathlon. Nwokey is ranked No. 13 nationally in the heptathlon.
Saturday began with two Red Raiders qualifying in the field events as freshman Kole Weldon opened action by punching his ticket to Des Moines with a fifth place finish in the men's discus. Weldon qualified with a throw of 58.50 meters (191'-11").
Moments later, sophomore Kyal Meyers qualified in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 5.35 meters (17'-6.50"). Meyers cleared his first attempts at both 17'-2.75" and 17'-6.50" before missing at 17'-8.50".
Tech then got off to a quick start in the running events as both the men's and women's 4x100 relay teams captured top-three finishes in their heats to automatically qualify. The men's 4x100 relay team, comprised of Ben McRoy, Gil Roberts, Shane Brathwaite and Bryce Lamb finished second in the first heat with a time of 39.76.
Shane Brathwaite and Katie Grimes then secured their spots in the NCAA Championships by placing in the top-three of their heats in the 110 and 100 meter hurdles. Brathwaite placed second in his heat with a time of 13.57 to automatically qualify. Grimes then followed with a second place finish in her heat, and a time of 13.25.
In the women's 200 meter dash both senior Taylor Evans and freshman Cierra White qualified. Evans automatically qualified by finishing third in her heat with a personal-best time of 23.26. White qualified based on time, crossing the line with a time of 23.54.
Freshman Jacorian Duffield qualified for the first national meet of his career by clearing the bar at 7'-1.50". Duffield cleared the bar on his first attempt after clearing the bar at 6'-9.75" on his first attempt and 6'-11.75" on his second attempt.
Tech closed the evening by qualifying both men's and women's 4x400 relay teams. The Red Raiders finished fourth overall with a time of 3:05.14. The Lady Raiders finished eighth overall with a time of 3:32.68.
