COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Amidst a field of 41 teams, the Texas Tech track and field teams made quite a statement with the men's team finishing fifth with 53.35 points and the women's team 11th with 23 points at the Midwest Regional in College Station, Texas. The team qualified 14 athletes in 11 events for the NCAA National Championships held June 9-12 in Austin, Texas.

In the first event of the day, freshman Lacy Wilson jumped 5'-8.50" (1.74m) in the high jump to finish in eighth for all-region status.

Junior Tyree Gailes qualified for Nationals with a time of 10.28 in the 100M dash. His fourth-place finish was ran in his best time of the season. Junior Licretia Sibley fell just short of qualifying for Nationals with a sixth-place finish in the 400m dash. Sibley turned in a time of 52.70.

Junior Jonathan Johnson sealed his second Midwest Regional Championship title in the 800M with a time of 1:47.81. His time did not break the Midwest Regional record, 1:47.64, which he set last season but did bring the men's team from 18th to 10th.

In the men's pole vault, Tech had six athletes competing, the most from one school in the competition. It was a tough field with four vaulters including redshirt freshman Sage Thames and sophomore Bobby Most clearing 17'-7" (5.36m) on first attempts. With six athletes in at 17'-11" (5.46m), Thames cleared on his second attempt, a new personal record, while Most cleared on his final attempt. Thames was named runner-up and Most finished in third, both ahead of Nebraska's Eric Eshbach who is ranked No. 1 in the nation. The point total from the duo was worth 14 points and moved the men's team into 7th-place from 10th.

Freshman Bryan Scott finished fourth for the Red Raiders with five points after turning in a time of 51.14 in the 400m hurdles.

Tech advanced two to Nationals in the 200M dash. Junior Albert Booker finished fourth with a time of 20.75 while junior Shereefa Lloyd finished fifth in a time of 23.13. Gailes added another all-region honor with a seventh-place finish running a time of 20.82. After the 200M races, the men were sitting at fifth while the women were at 14th.

Junior Stefanie Calhoun who holds the school record in the 3000M steeplechase took home eighth with a time of 11:04.40. Junior Geralda Dukuly turned in two points for the women's team with a jump of 41'-3.25" (12.58m) for a seventh-place finish.

Senior Jason Young saw a tough field with six of the top 10 throwers in the nation in the Midwest Region including Jason Young at fourth. Young made the cut with a fifth-place finish and a throw of 200'-8" (61.17m).

In the women's 4x400, the team saw the return of sophomore Tori Polk who has been injured much of the season. Senior Rachelle Evans led off for the Red Raiders and handed off to Lloyd with a split time of 54.3. Lloyd pulled the team in second before handing off to Polk. Polk fell to third when Sibley took over for the anchor leg. Sibley closed in on Wyoming on the homestretch but would finish in third with a time of 3:34.81, the fourth-best time in school history.

Junior Matt Stewart led off for the men's 4x400 team before handing off to Johnson who pulled the team into second behind Baylor, whose team is No. 1 in the nation. Scott took over from Johnson and would stay right behind Baylor when Booker took over for the anchor leg. The team finished third with a time of 3:06.83.
