LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field program continued its qualifying efforts Friday at Arkansas' John McDonnell Field in Day 2 of the NCAA West Preliminaries.
The No. 5 Red Raiders and No. 15 Lady Raiders pushed three more athletes through to the NCAA Championship finals in Eugene, bringing their total to six in two days of competition with the meet wrapping up Saturday.
Tech, for the second-straight season, will send the duo of Bradley Adkins and JaCorian Duffield to the NCAA Championship meet. Fresh off claiming the top two spots at the Big 12 Championships the pair wasted little time securing qualifying spots at the NCAA West Preliminaries, each clearing four straight bars on first attempts - the final coming at 2.16-meters (7-feet 1 inch).
On the track, junior Lady Raider Cierra White punched her own ticket to Oregon, finishing third in her heat and fifth overall in the quarterfinals of the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.41 seconds. She'll be making her third-career appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and second in the 100m. She finished sixth overall in 2013 to become Tech's first female All-American in the event since 2010 and second in school history.
White went on to secure a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals of the 200-meters as she finished third in her heat and eighth overall with a time of 23.32.
"She did an outstanding job," Associate head coach Dion Miller said. "She ran like a veteran."
Lady Raider sophomore Le'Tristan Pledger qualified Friday for the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles finishing third overall in 13.21 seconds. Pledger is looking to make her second-straight trip to the NCAA Championships in the hurdles.
"She handled the round very well." Miller said.
For the Red Raiders, sophomore Tramaine Maloney punched his ticket to Saturday's quarterfinals of the 110m hurdles with a third place finish in his heat. The All-Big 12 performer clocked a time of 14.09 seconds into a slight headwind, and will run Saturday at 7:05 p.m. for a chance to make his first career appearance at the national meet.
Teammate Trevor Mackey went on to qualify for the quarterfinals of the men's 200m with a third place finish in his heat. The All-Big 12 performer crossed the finish line in 20.97 seconds, and will compete Saturday at 7:35 p.m. for a chance to qualify for national meet.
The NCAA West Preliminaries continue with the third and final day of action Saturday at John McDonnell Field. Live results from the meet can be found at FlashResults.com.
