Rivera Advances to Finals at USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Nick Rivera advanced to the finals of the 800m run at the 2013 Junior USA Outdoor Championships.

DES MOINES, Iowa - Texas Tech freshman Nick Rivera punched his ticket to the finals of the 800-meter run at the 2013 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships after finishing second in his heat of Thursday's first round race.

Rivera crossed the finish line at Drake Stadium with a time of 1:53.28 to automatically qualify for the finals scheduled for Friday at 7:28 p.m. The top four finishers in Friday's finals will qualify for Team USA, which is scheduled to compete at the 2013 Pan Am Junior Championships Aug. 23-25 in Medellin, Columbia.

Rivera swept the 2013 Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the event becoming the first Red Raider in school history to do so and the first Big 12 athlete to accomplish the feat since 2008. His winning time of 1:50.03 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships marked a career-best.

Texas Tech sophomore sprinter Cierra White also competed Thursday finishing 28th overall in the first round of the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.98 seconds.  

Texas Tech senior Katie Grimes is scheduled to compete Friday in the first round of the women's 100-meter hurdles.

Friday's events will be televised live on ESPN2 beginning at 7 p.m. (CT).
