LUBBOCK, Texas - - Texas Tech senior distance runner Kennedy Kithuka was named the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week Wednesday as announced by the Conference.
The recognition comes after Kithuka, the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Champion, broke the school record in the 3,000-meter run to finish first overall in the Meyo Invitational Saturday at Notre Dame. In a dominant performance, the Thika, Kenya native crossed the finish line with a time of 7:50.26 which currently ranks second nationally in the event.
"It's a great honor for Kennedy," Texas Tech head track and field coach Wes Kittley said. "It was a great race to get him in good position for the NCAA Indoor Championships even without much competition."
Kithuka, who was tabbed to The Bowerman Preseason Men's Watch List, is currently undefeated during both his Texas Tech cross country and track careers. Meanwhile, he also holds the school record in the mile run and as a member of the distance medley relay.
Earlier this year he became the first Texas Tech athlete in school history to run a sub-four-minute mile finishing first overall at the Texas A&M Challenge with a time of 3:59.53 to set the school record. The performance came just one day after running the anchor leg of the distance medley relay and helping to set the school record with a time of 9:41.55.
The Texas Tech track and field program returns to action this weekend at the prestigious Tyson Invitational. Action begins Friday at the Randal-Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
