LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head coach Wes Kittley announced today the signing of Charles Jones Jr., one of the nation's top middle distance runners, to the Red Raider track and field team.
Jones Jr., an athlete from Cardinal Ritter College Prep School in St. Louis, Mo., has clocked a career-best of 1:49.96 in the 800-meter run - which ranks No. 1 nationally in the event among returners entering the 2014 outdoor season.
"He is a tremendous sign for our program," Kittley said. "Charles has the kind of talent and character that champions are made of. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have him become a Red Raider."
Jones Jr. rounds out a total of six signees since Wednesday's National Signing Day with the program expected to continue to sign student-athletes as the season progresses into the spring.
Texas Tech has also signed sprinter Steven Champlain (Medina Valley, Texas) along with distance runners Todd Mickey (Victoria, Texas) Wyatt Kieler (East Bernard, Texas), Alyssa Weaver (Jasper, Georgia) and Jared Mayoral (Rio Rancho, N.M.) to the program.
Champlain ended the 2013 outdoor season ranked in the top-3 in the state of Texas in the 400-meter dash with a season-best of 46.92 to finish runner-up at the Texas State Championships.
