The Lady Raider 4x400 relay returns Saturday to the site where it broke the school record last year.

Feb. 21, 2014

LUBBOCK, Texas- Entering its third consecutive week on the road, the Texas Tech track and field program is set to send a small contingent of sprinters and jumpers north for competition at the annual Alex Wilson Invitational this weekend. The one-day meet, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, is scheduled for Saturday inside the Loftus Sports Center.

The No. 17 Lady Raiders will send six student-athletes, a group that includes the national top-8 4x400 relay team, while the No. 17 Red Raiders will send just two student-athletes.

Events at the Alex Wilson Invitational are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The meet marks the final tune up for Texas Tech in advance of the Big 12 Indoor Championships scheduled for Feb. 28 - March 1 at Iowa State.

Texas Tech enters the Alex Wilson Invitational fresh off a very strong performance last weekend as the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders competed in meets across the region including the prestigious Tyson Invitational.

The Lady Raiders boast national top-16 rankings in six separate events, including the 4x400 relay and the long jump. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders boast top-16 marks in three events, including two high jumpers in the top-8.

The Lady Raider 4x400 relay team returns to the track where last year the squad broke a nine-year-old school record. Three legs, Amoy Blake, Christen Rivers and Cierra White return from that record-setting relay and enter the meet with a season-best time of 3:34.08 - good for No. 6 nationally.

Rivers, along with teammate and fellow relay leg Montenae Roy-Speight are both scheduled to compete in the 400-meter dash as well.

Shujaa Benson and Joseph Richards III are each scheduled to compete for the Red Raiders. Benson, who went an indoor collegiate-best of 7.54-meters (24'-9.00") last week in the long jump, will look for another strong performance in the event Saturday. He enters the meet No. 25 nationally and No. 3 in the Big 12 in the Big 12. He is also ranked No. 16 nationally in the 60-meter hurdles after clocking an indoor collegiate best of 7.80 last week at the Tyson Invitational.

Meanwhile, Richards III is scheduled to compete in the 400-meter dash. He enters the weekend with an indoor collegiate-best of 47.02 which he clocked Feb. 8 at the New Mexico Classic - a time that ranks fifth in the conference.
