LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raider track and field team jumped five spots to No. 12 in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Week 5 computer rankings released today.
The No. 12 ranking marks the highest for the Lady Raiders since Week 5 of the 2012 season.
The squad is coming off a strong showing at the Alex Wilson Invitational where sophomore Le'Tristan Pledger recorded a national top-8 mark in the long jump. The Red Raiders, which slid five spots to No. 22, and Lady Raiders now look towards the Big 12 Indoor Championships scheduled for this weekend in Ames, Iowa.
Texas Tech enters the Big 12 Championships as one of just two Big 12 programs with both its men's and women's teams in the top-25.
"I'm just really excited that this late in the year we are doing our best," Texas Tech head coach Wes Kittley said. "I'm just looking forward to the next few weeks because I feel like we are starting to perform at our best."
Pledger's jump of 20-feet 9 inches Saturday at Notre Dame marked the best by a Lady Raider indoors in more than eight years. She now boasts two marks in the top-8 nationally as she broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles earlier this season with a time of 8.07 seconds (converted to 8.09 for rankings), which ranks No. 4 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12. Teammate Shanice Stewart also holds national top-16 marks in two separate events as she enters the indoor conference meet at No. 8 nationally in the long jump and No. 12 in the pentathlon.
The Red Raiders enter the Big 12 Championships boasting four national top-16 marks including the Big 12's top-two high jumpers in JaCorian Duffield and Bradley Adkins. Junior Kole Weldon enters the meet No. 5 nationally in the shot put with a school record throw of 20.11-meters (65'-11.75").
The Big 12 Championships begin Friday at Iowa State inside the Lied Recreation Center.
