LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior sprinter Gil Roberts won the 400 meter dash Sunday afternoon at the 2012 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Roberts, who will compete for Texas Tech during the outdoor season, tied a personal-best time by running a 45.39 in the finals of the 400 meter dash at a nearly sold-out Albuquerque Convention Center.
"I'm definitely happy with the win," Roberts said. "It was important for me to run well against all of the competition that was there at the U.S. Championships. It gives me a good understanding of where I stand nationally indoors, but I really can't get caught up in it. This is only the beginning for me, and I now I'm looking forward to competing at the world championships, doing my best and competing for my country."
His time of 45.39 in the event currently ranks second in the world this year.
"It's just a great win for Gil," Texas Tech head coach Wes Kittley said. "It's great for our program and for Texas Tech University and marks our second U.S. Champion in two years."
The Albuquerque Convention Center has proven to be a track where Roberts has grown comfortable. On Feb. 10, The Oklahoma City native set a facility record with a blazing fast mark of 45.39.
Roberts will now represent the United States and compete at the World Indoor Track and Field Championships set to be held in Istanbul, Turkey March 9-11. It will mark Roberts second appearance at the World Championships.
Roberts represented the U.S. in 2009 at the World Outdoor Championships after finishing second at the U.S. Outdoor Championships.
During the 2009 outdoor season, Roberts won the Big 12 400 meters with a school record time of 44.86 before winning the Midwest Regional with a time of 45.71.
Roberts was a member of the 2009 All-American indoor 4x400 relay team and was the 2009 indoor NCAA runner-up and Big 12 Champion in the 400 meter.
During his prep years, Roberts was a five-time national champion, including a Nike Outdoor national championship.
