Lady Raider 4x400 Relay, Weldon Lead Nation After First Weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas - On the heels of a successful showing at the 2013 outdoor season-opener, the Texas Tech track and field team is well represented amongst the national rankings led by two national leaders.

A total of 15 student-athletes appear in the top-15 on the national outdoor performance list in their respective events, while the Lady Raider 4x400 relay team and sophomore Kole Weldon (shot put) currently rank No. 1 nationally. Two student-athletes appear in the Top-15 in two separate events.

The Lady Raider 4x400 relay, comprised of Christen Rivers, Tiffany Tarver, Olivia Lewis and Candace Jackson finished first overall at the 35th Annual Aztec Invitational last weekend, and currently leads the nation with a time of 3:36.94. Meanwhile Weldon, the 2013 NCAA Indoor Runner-Up in the shot put, jumped out to a fast start with a toss of 19.43-meters (63'-9.00") - which also leads the nation.

Weldon also ranks No. 15 in the men's discus throw with a mark of 54.40-meters (178'-6.00").

Texas Tech sophomore Cierra White ranks in the top-20 nationally in two separate events as the 2013 Indoor All-American is currently No. 2 nationally in the 200-meter dash (22.91) and No. 17 in the 100-meter dash (11.68).

Senior hurdler and 2013 Indoor All-American Katie Grimes took home a first place finish at the Aztec Invitational and currently ranks No. 3 nationally with a time of 13.48 last weekend in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Red Raiders have two athletes ranked in the top-10 of both the 400-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles. Senior Isaiah Gill currently ranks No. 6 in the 400-meter dash with a first place finish Saturday and time of 47.31. Freshman Joseph Richards III follows at No. 10 with a time of 47.64.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Dwayne Extol currently ranks fifth nationally after finishing first at the Aztec Invitational with a time of 52.16. Freshman Tramaine Maloney ranks seventh nationally with a time of 52.37.  

The top-48 athletes in each event qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries in Austin, Texas May 23-25.

Texas Tech will continue the 2013 outdoor season this weekend as a contingent of athletes will compete at the UTEP Springtime Invitational on Saturday.
