LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech will be one of just two Big 12 schools with both its men's and women's track and field teams in the top 20 of the national rankings entering the Big 12 Championships.
The Lady Raiders checked in at No. 17 and the Red Raiders at No. 18 in the Week 5 edition of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association computer rankings released Tuesday. The two squads, fresh off a strong performance at the April 25 Red Raider Open, now eye the conference meet set for May 3-5 in Waco, Texas.
Texas Tech collected 14 first place finishes at the Red Raider Open last week highlighted by a school record performance from sophomore sprinter Cierra White in the 100-meter dash. White finished first overall with a time of 11.09 seconds - currently No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 4 on the IAAF 2013 World Rankings list.
White has broken school records in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash this season.
The Red Raiders enter the meet led by sophomore Kole Weldon (shot put/discus) and senior Bryce Lamb (long jump/triple jump) who each appear in the top 25 of the NCAA Division I performance list in two separate events.
Texas Tech opens competition at the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Championships Friday May 3 at the Hart-Patterson Track.
