Week 5 Rankings

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raiders resurged back into the Top 10 on Tuesday as week five of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings were released.

After appearing at No. 11 last week, the Lady Raiders moved up two spots to No. 9 in the rankings marking the fourth time during the 2012 outdoor season that they have appeared in the top 10. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders fell one spot to No. 10.

"We are just very proud that people are respecting us and that we are hanging around the top 10 every week," head coach Wes Kittley said. "I'm very pleased and proud that we are mentioned within that group."

For the fourth time this season, both the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders are ranked in the top 10 during the same week. On April 24, the Lady Raiders slipped to No. 11 marking the only time this season in which both squads didn't appear in the top 10 during the same week.

"I think that shows our kids are running very consistent," Kittley added. "We are able to stay consistent from week-to-week. That's what's important so that when we get to the larger meets at the Big 12s and the NCAA First Round we are definitely going to be able to match, or even better, what our best has been all year. I think that is mostly what it shows me, that we are able to stay consistent."

The No. 10 Red Raiders and No. 9 Lady Raiders competed at both the 117th Penn Relays and the West Texas A&M Open last weekend. At the Penn Relays, senior Jamele Mason captured a first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles while the Lady Raider 4x400 team placed third in the Championships of America.

Tech also had a good showing at the West Texas A&M Open where junior Ifeatu Okafor recorded a season-best mark in the women's discus with a throw of 55.43 meters (181'-10.00") - which propelled her into the top 10 nationally in the event at No. 9.

Texas Tech will host its final home meet of the outdoor season on Saturday May 5 at the Fuller Track and Field Complex.
