Kithuka Named to Bowerman Trophy Watch List|

LUBBOCK, Texas- Texas Tech senior distance runner Kennedy Kithuka has been named to the official Bowerman Trophy May Watch List as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Wednesday.
The Bowerman Trophy is the crowning individual achievement in collegiate track and field annually honoring the top male and female athlete in the sport.
"It's a great honor for Kennedy to be named as one of the top track and field athletes in the country," Texas Tech distance coach Jon Murray said. "He is certainly someone to watch throughout the rest of the season."
The Bowerman Watch List features a total of 10 athletes with an additional eight receiving votes. Kithuka is one of two Big 12 athletes on the Watch List.
Kithuka is making his sixth career appearance on the Watch List after making five appearances during the 2013 indoor season.
The 2012 NCAA Cross Country Champion and 2013 NCAA Indoor 5,000-meter Champion, Kithuka has jumped out to a fast start to his senior outdoor campaign. The Thika, Kenya native currently holds the NCAA-leading time in the 5,000-meter run at 13:26.98 and the No. 2 time in the 10,000-meters at 27:41.73.
Kithuka won the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays Invitational 5,000-meter run by a full six seconds in April with his school record time.
In all, Kithuka holds five individual Texas Tech track and field school records, and in 2013 ran an NCAA All-Time Top-10 time in the 5,000-meter run at the Tyson Invitational with a school record of 13:25.38.
The Bowerman Trophy was first awarded in 2009 and is presented annually by the USTFCCCA. The award is named for legendary Oregon track and field and cross country coach Bill Bowerman.
