LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech decathlete Olavi Paavo was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VI University Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Second Team Thursday afternoon.

This award is the second academic post-season award for the Tallin, Estonia, native as he was named to the Academic All-Big 12 team prior to the conference championships where he earned All-Conference honors by placing seventh in the decathlon with 6,688 points.

Paavo is a sophomore civil engineering major and carries a 3.84 grade point average.

He was one of just six athletes form the Big 12 to earn the first or second team honors and one of 11 athletes from Texas on the list.
