DES MOINES, Iowa - Texas Tech Head Track and Field Coach Wes Kittley was honored by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Monday as he was named the Mountain Region Women's Coach of the Year.
Kittley, who is in his 13th season at the helm of the Texas Tech Track and Field program, oversaw seven Lady Raiders and two women's relays as they qualified 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships which begin Wednesday at Drake University.
"What I am so proud of is the girls getting recognized for the year that we have had," Kittley said. "I'm just really proud. It certainly recognizes the girls and the resiliency they have had all year."
They Lady Raiders were ranked in the top-10 of the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll six times during the 2012 outdoor season, climbing to as high as No. 6 on May 8.
Kittley was last named USTFCCCA Women's Mountain Region Coach of the Year following the 2009 season in which he led the Lady Raiders to a second place finish at the Big 12 Championships.
Kittley was instrumental in the development of senior transfer Precious Nwokey who twice broke the school heptathlon record during the 2012 outdoor season. Nwokey was the runner-up in the heptathlon at the Big 12 Championships in May with a school record 5,600 points. Her 5,600-point performance was a personal best and ranks No. 13 nationally as she gets set to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week.
Meanwhile, both the Lady Raider 4x400 relay and 4x100 relay squads qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The 4x100 relay broke the school record at the Red Raider Open on May 5 where they ran a time of 43.53.
Senior Rose Tanui also had a banner outdoor season in which she ran a personal-best time of 33:08.70 at the Stanford Invitational to enter the NCAA Championships ranked No. 9 nationally in the event.
Also under Kittley's tutelage, freshman Lady Raider Cierra White qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 200 meter dash.
Both the Red Raiders and the Lady Raiders will begin action at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday at Drake Stadium. ESPN3 and NCAA.com will provide live coverage of the meet beginning Wednesday, while ESPNU will air live coverage on Saturday June 9 beginning at noon eastern time.
