BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Two Texas Tech student-athletes turned in impressive performances Saturday at the U.S. Track and Field Junior Championships.
Red shirt freshman LeTristan Pledger officially earned a trip to the IAAF World Junior Championships with a second place finish in the women's long jump. Pledger, one of the top prospects in the country last year and native of Kansas City, Kan., jumped 6.23 meters (20'-5.25") on her fifth and final attempt.
The Junior World Championships are set to be held in Barcelona, Spain July 10-15.
"She just competed," assistant coach Dion Miller said of Pledger's performance. "I really feel like she did exactly what we recruited her to do, and what she is certainly capable of doing. Her future is bright and I think she is going to make everybody at Texas Tech very proud."
Meanwhile, freshman sprinter Cierra White qualified for the finals of the 200 meter dash with a fifth place finish and a time of 23.96 in the preliminaries.
White competed for Texas Tech this year and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships as a standout freshman earlier in June. She ran a season-best time of 23.51 at the Red Raider Open on May 5.
The final round of the women's 200 meter dash is scheduled for 3:55 p.m. Sunday.
