EUGENE, Ore. - Gil Roberts took his first step towards qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team Friday evening as he advanced to the semifinal round of the 400 meter dash at the Olympic Trials.
Roberts automatically advanced out of his heat after finishing third with a time of 45.64 despite heavy rains at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
"I'm very pleased," Head Texas Tech Track and Field Coach Wes Kittley said. "He didn't exert a lot of energy and I really couldn't have asked for a better race for the first round. He closed really well and came in third and it just looked easy for him. He was trying to pace himself and I just thought he did a fabulous job of managing his race."
The semifinals of the 400 meter dash are scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.
"I thought he did a good job of just relaxing and getting to that next round," Texas Tech Sprints Coach Dion Miller said. "We got in that top-three, we'll take it and we are moving on to the semifinals now."
Roberts ended his decorated Red Raider career earlier this month with a third place finish in the 400 meter dash at the NCAA Championships to earn first team All-American honors. Roberts is a six-time All-American.
The men's discus is scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. CT. Meanwhile, the men's 110 meter hurdles and women's long jump preliminaries are scheduled for June 29.
