Four Red Raiders Set Focus on Olympics
July 8, 2004 LUBBOCK, Texas - Four Texas Tech track and field student-athletes will be looking for the opportunity to trade in the red and black for a chance to don the red, white and blue at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team Trials at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif., over the next week. Those advancing will represent the United States at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, later this summer. Tech's 800 meter National Champion Jonathan Johnson enters the trials in the 800 meters as a favorite to advance after entering with the fifth-fastest qualifying mark. Johnson will compete in the semifinals Saturday at 8:10 p.m. CT with the finals following at 9:10 p.m. Monday. The top three finishers in the finals will earn a spot on the team. Tyree Gailes will compete in the men's 100 meter qualifying Saturday at 5 p.m. and the quarterfinals at 7:22 p.m. later in the afternoon, should he advance past the qualifying race. The 100 meter semifinals and finals are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and 6:48 p.m. Sunday, respectively. Licretia Sibley will represent the women's program in the 400 meters, which are set to get underway at 9:20 p.m. Monday with the quarterfinal race. The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 9:35 p.m. and finals next Saturday at 4:52 p.m. Jason Young will represent the Red Raiders on the field at the Trials. Young will compete in the discus qualifying round next Friday at 7 p.m. The discus finals are scheduled for 5:05 p.m. next Sunday. NBC and USA networks will carry live coverage during the events:
