LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior sprinter Jonathan Johnson finished second in his semifinal heat this afternoon with the second-fastest time of the day to advance to Monday's finals of the 800-meter run at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif.

Johnson paced himself in Friday's quarterfinal with a time of 1:48.87, but stepped it up in the semis at 1:47.19. The Abilene native is one of eight finalists vying for one of three spots on the U.S. Track and Field Team, which will compete in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, later this summer.

Monday's 800-meter final is set to start at 9:10 p.m. CT. Monday's live coverage from the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials begins at 9 p.m. on USA Network.

Red Raider sprinter Tyree Gailes saw his Olympic dreams come to an end in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter race. After claiming the 24th and final spot during Friday's qualifying round, Gailes missed out on advancing to the semifinals by a tenth of a second.

No Red Raider athletes are scheduled to compete Sunday. Licretia Sibley begins her quest for an Olympic team spot in the 400-meter quarterfinals Monday at 9:20 p.m.
