RUIDOSO, N.M. -The Raider and Lady Raider cross country teams both earned a first place finish today at the Texas Tech-New Mexico State Duel to open the 2013 season.
The Red Raiders swept the top five spots during the four-mile run lead by 2012 NCAA Cross Country Champion Kennedy Kithuka who finished first with a time of 19:53.80.
Sophomore Marcus Vallejo finished closely behind his teammate with a time of 20:34.00 finishing second.
The Lady Raiders overtook New Mexico State on the second time around the course to win the meet, and were paced by freshman Jocelyn Caro. In her first race as a Lady Raider she led her team to a first place finish with a time of 18:08.50 finishing second overall. Lady Raider Madeline Livergood finished third with a time of 18:23.50.
Head cross country coach Jon Murray was pleased with his team's performance to begin the season.
"It's a great start to the season with this performance," Murray said. "Both teams competed well and showed the work that was done this past semester."
Texas Tech will host its lone home meet of the 2013 season on Sep. 13 at Meadowbrook Golf Course.
