Sept. 13, 2013
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country program continued its fast start to the 2013 season Friday at Meadowbrook Golf Course as the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders swept the Texas Tech Open.
Kennedy Kithuka, the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Champion, once again paced the Red Raiders this time crossing the finish line first by well over a minute with a time of 24:09.00 in the men's 8,000-meter race. Meanwhile, the Lady Raiders were paced by junior Sharlene Nickle who earned her first win of the season crossing the finish line with a time of 19:05.59 in the women's 5,000-meter race.
"I was very happy with both our men and women today," head cross country coach Jon Murray said. "Our women looked much improved from this meet last year and our men had another strong performance."
The Texas Tech men's squad won the meet with 37 points as three Red Raiders finished in the top-four. Meanwhile the Lady Raiders won the women's meet with 37 points as well. Five Lady Raiders finished in the top-15. The two squads also defeated Oral Roberts in a duel meet between the two programs.
With the dominant performance, Kithuka remains unbeaten in his Texas Tech cross country career after winning seven-straight races in the 2012 season and opening this year with back-to-back victories. The Thika, Kenya native crossed the line with ease Friday evening with his trademark smile while flashing the Texas Tech `Guns Up' symbol.
"He just works really hard and he's humble," Murray said. "He goes about it in a great way and he just does a good job at what he does and it's fun to watch."
Texas Tech returns to action Sept. 13 as the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders compete at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.
