FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Texas Tech junior and rising star Kennedy Kithuka captured his fourth-straight win of the season Saturday morning at the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival held at the University of Arkansas.
Kithuka crossed the line first overall with a time of 28:53.00 in the 10,000-meter race, a full 1:20 ahead of second place finisher Girma Mecheso of Oklahoma State. The Red Raiders finished second overall in the team standings with 109 points while the Lady Raiders finished 19th in the women's 6,000-meter race with 579 points.
Kithuka's time on Saturday was the fastest at the Chile Pepper Festival since 2006.
"It was a great effort by the men's team," head coach Jon Murray said. "It was a wonderful start to the 10k distance, and Kennedy had another dominating race."
With the first place finish, Kithuka remains unbeaten in 2012 having captured victories at the Texas Tech Open, Red Raider Open, Kansas Rim Rock Classic and Saturday's Chile Pepper Festival. The Thika, Kenya native and transfer from Wayland Baptist University has already twice been named the Big 12 Runner of the Week.
He was followed Saturday by teammate Ezekiel Kissorio who crossed the line seventh overall with a time of 30:33.70.
Texas Tech will now shift its focus to the 2012 Big 12 Championships scheduled for Oct. 27 in Austin, Texas.
