Kithuka Captures Big 12 Crown

AUSTIN, Texas -Texas Tech junior Kennedy Kithuka continued his remarkable 2012 season by capturing a Big 12 Championship Saturday morning at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

Kithuka, who entered the conference meet unbeaten this season, finished first overall in the men's 8,000-meter race with a time of 22:52.8 - more than a minute ahead of the runner up. Kithuka set the Big 12 Championships record for the men's 8,000-meter race and was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. 

"It was just a fantastic race by Kennedy," Texas Tech head coach Jon Murray said. "He dominated the competition from the start and it was a strong showing by the entire men's team."

With 24 points, Oklahoma State won its fifth consecutive conference men's team title, while Iowa State won its second consecutive women's conference championship with 34 points.  

Kithuka, a junior transfer from Wayland Baptist, has now captured five first-place finishes in five races this year while becoming Texas Tech's sixth Big 12 individual champion in seven years and first ever male Big 12 Champion.

Kithuka was followed by teammate Ezekiel Kissorio who finished 22nd overall with a time of 24:34.9 as the Red Raiders finished sixth overall in the team standings with 154 points - the highest finish for the men's team at the Big 12 Championships in program history. 

The Lady Raiders finished 10th overall with 262 points in the 6,000-meter race. Freshman McKenzie Archer who finished 57th overall with a time of 22:49.2 paced the Lady Raiders on Saturday morning. 

Archer was followed immediately by teammates Chelsea Scott who finished 59th with a time of 22:52.9, Madeline Livergood who finished 62nd with a time of 23:01.70 and Emily Koenig who finished 65th with a time of 23:10.30.
