LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raider and Lady Raider cross country teams are set to open the 2013 season Friday as the two squads compete at the Texas Tech/New Mexico State Dual in Ruidoso, N.M.
The two squads will begin competition at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
"It's a great opportunity to see how our summer training went," head coach Jon Murray said. "It will give us a great indication of what our starting point is for this season."
The Red Raiders enter the 2013 campaign fresh off one of the most productive seasons in program history. Senior Kennedy Kithuka will anchor the squad as he gets set to defend his NCAA and Big 12 title. The Thika, Kenya native went unbeaten in seven races last year on his way to winning the program's first-ever men's NCAA Individual Cross Country Championship.
Kithuka also won the NCAA Indoor 5,000-meter Championship during the 2013 track and field season.
"It's his senior season so we are anticipating some great things," Murray said. "He is looking very good."
The Lady Raiders return Chelsea Scott for her senior season. Scott turned in one of the most productive seasons for the Lady Raiders in 2012 registering two top-five finishes and turning in the squad's best time at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in November.
Texas Tech will host its lone home meet of the 2013 season on Sept. 13.
