LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Kennedy Kithuka was tabbed today as the Big 12 Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for his performance at Texas Tech's season opener last week.

Kithuka, the 2012 Men's NCAA Cross Country Champion, finished first overall by more than 40 seconds at the Texas Tech/New Mexico State Duel Friday afternoon. The Thika, Kenya native led a pack of Red Raiders who swept the top-five spots as Tech coasted to an easy victory in the team standings by 33 points.

"It's a nice start to the season for Kennedy and just a wonderful honor for him," head coach Jon Murray said.

With the dominant win, Kithuka remains unbeaten during his Texas Tech career as he went unblemished through the 2012 season with seven wins in seven races. Kithuka captured Tech's first men's Big 12 Individual title and the program's first men's individual NCAA Cross Country Championship.

Kithuka is now a four-time winner if the Big 12 Runner of the Week award after earning the honor on three separate occasions during the 2012 season.

Texas Tech hosts its lone home meet of the 2013 season Sept. 14 at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock.
