LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior cross country runner Kennedy Kithuka was tabbed Monday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the National Athlete of the Week following yet another dominant showing on the national stage.
Kithuka, the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Champion, finished first overall at the historic Cowboy Jamboree Saturday crossing the finish line with a time of 23:55.27 in the 8,000-meter race. He won the meet by more than 30 seconds, finishing well ahead of five All-Americans littered throughout the next six spots.
The victory marked Kithuka's 10th-straight in a Red Raider uniform as he continued his unbeaten and downright dominant Texas Tech career. Kithuka went unblemished in 2012 winning each of his seven races on the way to capturing Tech's first-ever men's individual NCAA title.
Along the way he captured the Big 12 individual title and was later named the National Male Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA.
The Thika, Kenya native has now swept each of the first three races in 2013 and will compete at the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival Oct. 5.
